A coming-of-age story about a cat
THELONIOUS THINKS HE’S BIG

Thelonious thinks he’s big, but he’s not
He hides behind a doorway and waits for unsuspecting prey to pass
Sometimes he pounces
Sometimes he watches
Always aware
His sharp claws easily scratch

Thelonious dwarfs the fish
The fish he taunts
With steady eye he watches
With playful paw he touches the glass

Thelonious climbs to the top
The top of everything
How high can he get?
As a kitten, he would cry
Now he likes to be up high

When I draw and color
He lies right on the paper
Thelonious move!
He won’t
He reaches for my crayon as it moves across the page
Silly cat!

Always interested in what I’m doing
Unless he chooses otherwise

It’s feeding time
Thelonious knocks over his food
All on the floor
What a mess!
He wants a taste of my food
I yell NO but he tries again

Bath time
While I’m in the tub
Thelonious sits on the edge of the sink
If the faucet is dripping, he’ll take a drink
He may take a bath too, but not in the tub!

When nighttime comes and I climb into bed
Thelonious is there to share my covers
He just wants a scratch, scratch, scratch behind his ears
His purrs are loud, like a rumbling sound
Thelonious closes his eyes
So do I
Goodnight Thelonious
