When the one you love is far away...
One winter night I dreamed I could fly;
I flew from my window and into the sky.
My hair in dark, wild tangles swirled;
My pale nightgown of gossamer unfurled.
I needed no map, my heart already knew
The compass was pointing straight to you.
Over dark forests and hills wet with dew
My arms outstretched, I floated and flew.
The wind was strong as it carried me on ;
It knew my dream would end with the dawn.
Over the water and through the towns;
effortlessly my destination was found.
I climbed through your window, quiet as the dead,
and stealthily, I tiptoed up to your bed.
You lie still as a statue in the shadowy room;
I found my way by the light of the moon.
Without sound in the starlight, up I flew
until I floated above the bed beside you.
In the silent shadows I lie down there
and ran my fingers through your hair.
The moon held us both in its dreamy embrace
as the receding darkness revealed your face.
Lying on the pillow, I whispered in your ear
ancient, winsome ballads only lovers can hear.
Promising devotion and other rapturous things
with mystical melodies and enchanting themes.
Then somewhere in the misty patchwork of dreams,
you perceive my white form move in the moonbeams.
You were sleepily accepting and vaguely aware
of a pale, silvery ghost who was hovering there.
You pulled me so close, I could hear your heart beat;
two souls merging making each one complete.
In etheral beauty no mortal can conceive,
my hair falls around your face like a wreath.
Near you, beside you, above you, around you.
Until in a mysterious way to surround you.
Oh, in that passionate fantasy of mine,
I was sorely tempted to disregard time.
But as the day's velvet blush seeped in,
I knew that soon I must fly home again.
So in the icy haze I kissed your lips
as quickly had ended my night flying trip.
Before I got caught by the light of dawn,
I swiftly left you to fly away home.
And into my own lonely bed then slipped,
awaking with the taste of your breath on my lips.
