Student Activity: Let them try to reconstruct some sentence whoppers! |
Directions: • Print these sentences out in 16 font Times New Roman putting 2 spaces between each word for easy cutting. • Cut up each sentence into strips of several words each and then put al strips for one sentence in an envelope. You should have one envelope for each sentence. • Divide the class into 3-6 groups and hand each group a sentence to put together as it should be. • Sometimes students can come up with alternatives that work. That is part of the fun. 1. Once upon a time a beautiful and highly intelligent fairy princess lived in a kingdom by the sea. (18 words) 2. The first grade student rode a snazzy new Mongoose bicycle around and around in her front yard as her brother threw colored water balloons at her. (27 words) 3. My favorite television show is Survivor because all those people lie and sneak around behind each other’s back to try to win a million dollars. (25 words) 4. It is a big concern of the American people that the national debt grows five hundred dollars every second of every day and now totals nearly six trillion dollars. (30 words) 5. When an academic culture encourages research into secret topics but feels no responsibility for explaining such projects to the public, it risks losing its very vital source of support. (34 words) 6. It is very hard to define the purpose of education and what education does to a student’s life because every student accepts education in different ways even though they all get the same education at colleges.
