Just something that's been in my head for over a year now.
It was cold outside, espically atop the roof of the building where the wind could rush at you with no restriction. I had left my coat behind, I had a feeling I wasn't going to need it anymore. I just stood there looking out at the small town, the few lights on in some of the windows cut throught the blackness like stars going nova. I took my cell phone out of my pocket to check the time and delete the missed call. The missed call that pretty much started all of this only a few hours ago, the spark in the powder room if you will. 5:48 am shown back in my face from the lcd screen on my phone. I closed it shut, the small thump being the only noise made seemed like a catastrophic eruption in my ears, and tossed it gently down into the empty parking lot below. The smashing was drowned out by someone joining me on the roof. I could hear them struggling up the plank and over the small wall to finally set foot on the plastic coverd roof much like Neil Armstrong had set foot on the unmared moon. I heard the footfalls comming close, the sticking noise seeming to actually tear into the night, until they stopped directly behind me. A rustling was made behind me and I soon heard a heavy, metallic click near the back of my head.
"It's not too clear out tonight it is?" I asked the blackness that lie in front of me.
"Why aren't you scared?" the broken voice behind me croaked.
"Not one for the formalities tonight?"
"WHY NOT!" the voice nearly shatterd into a free-fall of tears with that burst but was somehow able to hold itself together.
I looked down and closed my eyes before I spoke. "Because I know how this is going to end. For me, for you, for them, for all of us. I know how this is going to end."
"You're lying," he disembodied voice put something against the back of my head.
"Ask yourself what would I get out of lying to you right now?"
"I don't know, I don't care and I don't know. All I know is that I..."
"Want to pull the trigger," I cut the voice off quietly.
"Yeah."
"If you really did, you'd have done it by now wouldn't you?"
"I don't care."
I turned to see the face of the voice, tear soaked and sullen with pain, pointing the metal beast into the front of my head. "You know I won't stop you."
"Makes it easier."
"You know I did nothing wrong."
"You're lying."
"You know not one of us has done anything wrong."
"We'll just have to let god figure that one out."
"And when you finally die, what do you think will happen?"
"All that matters is the now. It's not like you'll be going anywhere good."
I took a breath and looked out into the night sky again, the pink of morning was just comming and the air was getting colder. "Are you really going to do this?"
"Don't you already know that?"
"Just thought I'd ask before I wasn't able to."
