Describe what you imagine your academic journey to be like at Bowdoin
In The Life of Pi, Pi is stuck on a raft with an orangutan, zebra, spotted hyena, and a Royal Bengal tiger. While hopefully my experience is not literally like Pi’s in the sense of everything being eaten and suffering from starvation and dehydration out at sea with a Royal Bengal tiger, I do imagine my journey at Bowdoin to be similar to the idea.
There will be many things I encounter and some courses which I will befriend (like the orangutan) but, ultimately, it will not stay with me. I will watch as the zebra suffers, and be thankful that I am not subjected to such academic torture. I will focus on the hyena, the subject I am most afraid is going to devour me, but I will escape that evil fate as well. Then there will be the Royal Bengal tiger. It will stay with me throughout my journey. I will be cautious and wary of it, and find ways to work with it rather than against it. But in the end, when I inevitably come out alive from the experience, I will be grateful for the tiger, even though it made me work, and rise to challenges I could have never imagined. I will have a wonderful journey when it is all over, one that people who did not endure it with me will not believe. A journey so amazing, that I myself have a difficult- yet wonderful time trying to comprehend the entire meaning.
