MIDNIGHT SCREAMS

The party was winding down, as parties tend to do,
after the music had faded and the drinking was through.
Jimmy got his jacket on and said to the other guys
"It's really late and we best go home, might be wise!"

The others were laughing as they walked to the car
joking about who was sober enough to drive so far.
Stan said it was his turn, grabbing the keys from Jim.
Jimmy was too drunk to care, so he easily gave in.

Jeannie and Joe climbed in the back on unsteady feet,
followed by Earl and Donny, who admitted their defeat,
trying to outdo each other in a drinking contest that night.
Earl was feeling no pain at all, and Donny was a sight!

The old Chevy roared into life and they sped toward home,
from the back they heard Jeannie cry out "Leave me alone!"
Stan turned his head to see what was going on back there
and the car careened off the road and straight into the air.

They say that these things only happen in bad dreams,
the sound of metal torn apart and those midnight screams.
Bruised and bleeding, the smell of death and leaking gas
A one-way trip to Heaven as slow-motion moments pass.

Five young lives were lost that night, yes, all but one,
who will never see another morning mist or setting sun.
Why one was spared we will never know for sure, I'll bet,
it's safe to say that God wasn't ready for him just yet.

The moral of this story should be taken to your heart
for drinking and driving is a killer right from the start.
As long as Jimmy lives, he will see it in his dreams
and hear once more the sound of midnight screams.

PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!

Just another Mother Against Drunk Driving,
