A Chipmunk Visits Me
The Grinny scoots out quickly to see what is new in his world. He seats himself on a piece of the natural tan cut stone wall and looks curiously at me for I am something new. I am sure that he is aware that I was not there the last time he surveyed his kingdom. I must appear to him as an elephant would to me. Hopefully my skin appears softer and less wrinkled in his big brown eyes, but I am not sure the Grinny would agree.

He is small and quick with light brown fur filled with a number of dark stripes that run from his head to his tail. He is quite handsome in my eyes and I am sure that his spouse or significant other would agree. He twitches nervously as I turn the page of my notebook while writing. He does not believe that I represent a threat to him but he is wise to to be cautious. There are other creatures about that may only view him as their next meal. What a pity to think that way, for the Grinny is handsome in his striped fur coat and smiling face.

He jumps back now to whence he came even though I have remained as motionless as I am able to while putting pen to paper. I wonder what his name might be or what his parents call him. Might he be named Jack or perhaps he is named Thor? I do not know but I like him just the same.

I will sit quietly for a while in hopes that he returns to visit me again. Perhaps I will be napping in the warm days’ sun in my plastic Adirondack type chair as he scampers about doing his thing, making a living. I am sure that we will never be close friends during my short weekend stay. It is my sincerest hope that he understands that I have the utmost respect for him and wish him a long life. I have enjoyed his visit and I hope to see him again before I have to leave. I also wish that the next time he visits he can stay a little longer so that I might admire him from a distance and cause him no worry in his life.
