A ghost takes his time for Flash Fiction |
On October 12th, 2005, George made the transition. It had been rather abrupt as far as such things went. He clearly remembered the feeling of disorientation, like a business traveler waking up in a strange hotel, not sure where he was, frantically trying to pull comprehension from his surroundings of strange furniture and mass produced art hanging on the walls. Eventually, it all made perfect sense and George went about the business of making the most of life after death. He knew that he had a path waiting for him, a path that would take him to The Beyond, Existence Part 2 in an infinite series of sequels, each unique and yet built upon the foundation of its predecessor. He also knew that he had no need to hurry. He had plenty of time; two years, six days and seven hours to be exact. George spent the time floating in the background of the lives of his family and friends. To his delight, he found that he had lost the need to judge others. He could see the truth and beauty behind every action and thought. He saw fear and hate, but there was a contrast about these emotions that added to the fullness of every life, as if preventing a monochrome existence devoid of emotional tides. He could see quite clearly that love was the engine of life, powering it to a potential without bounds. A slight tingling of bells in the background told him his time was up. He had an appointment to keep. She sat up with a confused look on her face. This was her house, her room, her bed. There was George standing with his hand out to her. Taking it, she stood and smiled at her husband, everything suddenly clear. Their wait was over. Word count 300 |
