A lifelong search, finally rewarded.
I searched for you my whole life;
My other, my twin.
Separated by circumstance,
I knew not how to begin

One day I received a visit;
An investigator -- strange man!
He told me you were looking, too.
He told me your name...Anne

We called each other by telephone;
We spoke, we cried, we laughed.
Anyone who was listening,
Would have thought we were daft!

We arranged to meet each other
On the anniversary of our birth.
We'd exchange our separate gifts then
And celebrate our mirth.

I searched forever to find
The one gift that was 'just right.'
Even though I don't know you yet
You should like what I do, tonight.

I wrapped my gift most lovingly,
A full set of my favorite books.
But as you opened it carefully
I didn't understand your strange looks.

You laughed and laughed, then laughed some more
As you held that treasured set.
My feelings were hurt, my heart felt the pain;
Even my cheeks were wet.

You saw my face, the laughter stopped.
You assured me all was fine.
You open the cover to show the picture
Of the author whose name's on the spine.

Then I got it. I had to laugh, too;
Finally I understood.
The one who'd written those treasured words
In front of me, laughing, stood.
