* I should explain, before you read this poem, that destinydances suggested that perhaps I come up with a "baker's dozen", or 13, poems based on her Invalid Item contest prompts. These are not meant to be particularly serious, and some are quite bawdy and irreverent, or just plain odd.
Just so you have been warned.
Room to Rent
There is a room to rent upstairs
It isn’t any use to me.
Oh, not that anybody cares
About the love that used to be.
Until last year the room was used
To house my giant desert rat.
The state of things must be excused
He had a messy habitat.
Not often does a human find
A rodent who is such a friend.
I hope the smell you will not mind
I hope his droppings don’t offend.
I could have cleaned the room a bit
But couldn’t bear to touch a thing
Each trace of smelly rodent shit
Just sets my heart to trembling.
There is a room to rent upstairs
It isn’t any use to me.
Oh, not that anybody cares
About the love that used to be.
