Accessories sub-List (Clothing)

This is my Accessories sub-list from my "Clothing/Materials Reference (Full List)" . The intention of this list is as a creative writing reference, but if it helps for other projects, that's ok, too.

Breaking this list out of the main list should make it easier to search for items under the identified topic only. Other clothing/materials items should be referenced from the main list or from their individual breakdown category. This list is comprehensive, but also incomplete. (Reference sites at the end.)


Accessories – decorator or functional pieces added to or carried with garments

- Apron (pinafore) – cloth covering outer garments to protect them from soilage or accidental destruction; often worn with ruffles and as a "cute" accent for children's wear
- Badge – accessory awarded for any number of reasons
- Bags (see "Containers")
- Baldric – belt worn across the chest
- Bangle – jewelry or decorative accessory for garments or the body
- Beads – decorative notions for garments, the body, hair, etc.
- Bells – ringing decorative notions used in 14th & 15th centuries
- Braid – a plait twisting at least three lengths of hair or textiles together
- Chain – an accent, jewelry accessory, or fastener for garments and armor
- Clavi – (Roman) the purple vertical stripe worn by senators and equites
- Clerical collar – detachable neck piece
- Dangle – hanging decoration
- Dicky (dickey, dickie)
         o A woman's blouse front worn under a suit jacket or low-necked garment
         o A man's detachable shirt front
         o A collar for a shirt
         o A child's bib or pinafore
- Doublings – Roman leather and brass shoulder pieces denoting rank
- Embellishments – accents, decorations, flourish
- Fan – an arched, usually stiff or feathered accessory for show or for cooling the body
- Favor – a lady's small material gift (token) given to a champion prior to challenge or combat, often a scarf, kerchief, strip of material, locket, embroidered material, glove, etc.
- Frog – leather hangar for swords, daggers, axes, etc.
- Handkerchief
         o Kerchief
         o Neckerchief
- Hikes (or skirt hikes) – leather belting to keep one's skirt from getting in the way of movement or out of the mud
- Jewelry (see Jewelry)
- Muff
         o a tubular fashion accessory, usually of fur, for keeping the hands warm
         o a device, or fashion accessory, usually of fur, for protecting and/or keeping the ears warm
- Muffler – a scarf, usually worn in cold weather

- Ornament – accent decorations
- Pinafore – an apron worn by male, female, child or adult sometimes trimmed with flounces' for women may be worn as a dress or smock over a blouse
- Plait – a braid
- Placards (also plackets) – stomacher http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stomacher
- Parasol – umbrella
- Plumes – feathers, usually fluffy
- Ribbon – streamer of material for decorative or strap use on garments, hats, or hair
- Scarf – cloth covering for head or body (i.e. shoulders or hips)
- Sequins – glittering decorative tokens (usually small disks) for glamour-style dressing
- Stole – (Religious) liturgical vestment; a band of colored cloth 7 to 9 feet long, 3 to 4 inches wide, center is worn around the neck and the ends are draped in front

- Vestee – a decorative front piece worn under a woman's jacket or blouse so as to be visible at the neckline.
