It has been pointed out that this is not quite a sonnet, due to meter issues. I'll be back to work on those. Comments are very welcome.
--------------------------------------
Years are marked by days that special meanings hold.
New beginnings often make for celebrations that are best.
We’ve merged our lives together, as one as we grow old.
This is only our sixth year, a good start on all the rest.
Our growing children help us to pass the time,
Promising a lifetime full of laughter.
Hugs, smiles, and tears mark our life's clock steady chime
With our son Owen, and Riannon, our darling daughter.
This year sees you all far from my arms,
As I serve out my term in distant desert sand.
Yet I smile as I think about your charms,
And am comforted to know you understand.
This verse is my gift for you, dear Valerie.
I hope it makes for a Happy Anniversary.
