poem of a child who writes the last entry in her diary
Even though the room is still and dark,
a tiny beam of silver moonlight finds itself in through a bare window.
It seemed as though the house was silent,
except the sound of fire from a candle that flickers, flickers, flickers.
The painting of a magnolia, an Iris, and a wood violet contrasts on the empty wall,
a shiny nickel lay on the desk by the window.
there is a black journal with the words Lucy Marie written on the cover.
no eerie feeling, simple peace rested as the candle fire flickers, flickers, flickers.
A little girl enters the room,
her pale face and black eyes matched that of the moon on the dark sky.
she takes her time to soak in the features of this place that was once her home,
she searches for a golden key in the room and the candles fire flickers, flickers, flickers.
Her white lace reaches her ankles as does her blonde curls,
she checks beneath the lilac pillow,
she looks inside of her bureau,
she stands in the center absorbed in thought and smiles,
when she reaches the candle by her journal it flickers, flickers, flickers.
The girl slides the candle to obtain a deep blue velvet bag,
she takes out a copper key and crosses to the other side of the room.
she reaches her jewlery box and she twist the key into it's lock,
as it opens the inside is lighted by the candle fire who flickers, flickers, flickers.
A golden key lay inside and the shape is quite unique,
the Key's top is shaped like a heart with angel wings,
she brushes her thumb across the key and holds it with care.
as she returns back to the candle it flickers, flickers, flickers.
And so the child inserts the key into the heart of the black journal,
she opens the book and takes a feather to dip in an ink bottle on the desk.
she brushes across an empty page, the last page, in elegant letters,
"If you are reading this journal, I bid you farewell as I am leaving for heaven. Love, Lucy Marie."
As she locks the diary back and places the key atop it, she blows out the candle that flickered, flickered, flickered.
