STALLION WILD AND FREE

A stallion stood above the plains in majestic pose,
wind-tossed mane flying, so the old story goes.
Wild and free, unbroken by any human touch,
a horse whose capture would bring so much.

The cowboys planned to hunt him down and try
to find him and break his spirit, it was do or die.
Only yesterday they had caught a glimpse of him.
Excited, they rode hard but soon lost his trail again.

In bright sunshine or pouring rain they kept on
but their quest was futile, they'd known all along
that the stallion was one that would never be caught.
They would eventually give up, like it or not.

The cougar's snarl startled one cowboy's mare
who reared and threw his rider without a care.
The cowboy lay within the cougar's direct path
and soon he would know the creature's wrath.

From out of nowhere the stallion raced headlong,
in a flash of hooves the battle of beasts was on.
Before the cowboy's eyes, the battle was ending
and the stallion looked in some need of mending.

The cougar gave up the fight and soon ran away
while the stallion ran wild and free another day.
The other men gathered to hear the cowboy's story
of a close brush with death, of the stallion's glory.

Back home, they told their children and wives
of the magnificent horse that saved their lives.
The children listened with anticipation for more
stories of the wild horse they'd heard about before.

Years passed, and as every storyteller knows
the facts of their story always grows and grows..
A stallion stands above the plains in a majestic pose,
wind-tossed mane flying, so the old story goes.
