my sadness in my friend's divorce

I just spoke with a very, very good friend who is going through a most horrible time.  His wife has been cheating on him for quite some time but, as most of us have done or would do, he took on the demeanor of an ostrich and stuck his head in the sand.  It has finally gotten so bad now that he has filed for divorce and had papers served on his wife and her lover, at the restaurant where they are having dinner right this moment.  He had no other choice.  They have two children, ages 15 and 13.

To make a nightmarish situation worse the other man in this love triangle was part of our group that hung around together all the time.  We vacationed together, we went to church together, we ate together, we cried together.  We thought we knew each other.  We didn’t.  We didn’t at all.  While all of us thought this guy, an ex-preacher, was so funny and such a wonderful Christian he was cheating on his own wife with someone in our group.  This is going to take a long time to sink in my head and heart.

And her.  I thought she was my best friend.  This love affair has been going on for 10 years.  Now I feel that our whole friendship has been based on a lie; the lie that she loved her husband and family.  It’s hard when you discover things about people that you actually wish you hadn’t.

What can I do or say as a friend?  What can I say to either of them?  What is there to say?

I believe my heart is broken for all of them.  With the brokenness of their family brings the reality that none of us know what the future holds.

Thank you God that I know you hold the future.  I absolutely do not want the future, any future, without you.
