Little Red Booties


I saw a dog with wheels today.
She was wearing a trailer
Hauling her hind quarters.

Kneeling down,
I touched a cold wet nose
and simply said, “You are a sweetie.”

Rising again and meeting the eyes
Of her mother,
she smiled and replied,

“I just met another man.
He said he was ready
to give up on life.”

“After seeing my dog
he decided to change
his mind.”

“And if it weren’t for
the gift of this wheelchair
my dog would be dead.”

As they
Crossed the street,
I noticed dangling feet

wearing little red booties.
