This short essay resulted from a writing prompt at a local drop-in writing workshop.
The once living, now famous, dead person that I can think of who is named Frances is St. Francis of Assissi.  Today, he can be found at the top of churches, and on medallions trapped in praying hands.  When I was younger, I thought he was St. Frances, a sissy.  I wondered why people would pray to a coward.

What I really wanted to know is who thought to change the 'i' to an e' so that unsuspecting newborns might be forever blessed with having to clarify the spelling of their name.  How many times have I been asked, "Do you spell that with an 'i' or an 'e?'  After many years of frustration at this question, I've come up with my answer, -
"That's 'e' for estrogen, and I'm no sissy!"
