I story to show children of divorce that we parents understand.

The Divorced Child

This story is written as a way of telling my Charity Faith Marie how much she means to me, and that I am sorry for anything I did not see to fix,. I am sorry she is hurting, and I am always here for you. My love for you is not tied up in what you say, you do, or even how much you love other people. My love is for a beautiful little girl who has a big part of my heart. You never have to feel that I have stopped loving you because of anything that happens.

The Divorced Child

Once up on a time there lived a family. This family had a daddy, mommy, a beautiful little girl, and two feisty little boys. This seemed like an ideal family. Nothing could beat the five of them together.

No one ever seen the mommy and daddy fight. Everyone thought they would be together forever, and so did the little girl. She played with her brothers. She enjoyed going to the park and places with her mom. She knew that when they would come home it would be the five of them again. Daddy would be there maybe working on the truck, playing with the dog, or just watching television. Sometimes the five of them would pick up a friend and head to the lake to fish. Nothing was wrong with this family.

Until one day, mommy and daddy took the three children to the park together. This only had happened a couple of times before when daddy needed a break, but he was not gone over a few weeks. This time it was different. No one talked. The parents were holding hands, and the children could see tears flowing down the mom’s cheeks.

At the park, Marie and her brothers played. They would yell for their dad or mom to push them in the swing or chase them across the park. Something was really wrong. Dad came across the grass much slower than his usual playful self, and the mother who was always playing didn’t go to the kids at all.

Before leaving the park, the parents called the kids under the shelter. Mommy said, “ Daddy, is going to live with Granny.” She tried to stop from sobbing. Marie and the baby brother came over to her and put their arms around her. They had seen her upset before, but this time was an ending. They could feel it. She looked as though she would never smile again. “Daddy, will still see you. I will take you to him. He loves you and I do too.” Then her mom sobbed, and her dad put his arms around her and said. “I know that everything will be alright.” Now Dad had sorrow in his voice. They had heard anger in his voice before but never sadness.

They finished the evening playing trying not to show pain. The parents dropped Marie and her brothers at their mammal’s house. They hugged the children, and said that they had to do some packing. Then Marie watched as her mother’s car climbed up the drive. Dad was driving. She wondered if she would ever see her dad drive the family’s car again.

It didn’t get easier for Marie. She would secretly hurt as she watched her mother hide in work. It seemed that anytime day or night she would work overtime and other shifts. Marie felt as though her dad (whom she had not seen for over 6 months) and her mom (who put her energizes into work) were both gone. Marie and her brothers stayed the long invisible hours there with their grand mother as if their parents were dead, at least that is how sad it felt to them. She would cling to her mom, begging her not to go to work again. Marie liked the trips to the store with her mom, but those trips didn’t hold her when she felt so alone.

Marie couldn’t blame her hurt mother, so she lashed out about her dad. After all her was the one who didn’t come back, call, or even ask to visit. Marie’s mom did not help anything when she would say that her dad was just trying to get his life together. It only made her feel as though her dad was truly the bad guy in this thing. After all, mom was alone. Dad had already remarried and had a new life.

Time went on as it does, but hearts stayed broken. Her dad and her step mother had another child. Marie lives with them now because she missed her dad so much that Marie’s mom thought that living there would help her not to be so angry at him. If the anger got better, then she would find it easier to go to school where other children had two parents. However, while she was at her dad’s, she would be angry with her mom.

She knew that they could not ever live in the same house, and her anger started being focused on her mom, her mom’s family, her step-mother, and even her new brother.

She hated feeling this way. People would tell her that it was not her fault that her parents weren’t together. Her mom says that it was not her dad’s fault that he needed to have a different life. It had to be someone’s fault! It wasn’t fair that she had to choose, and no one would be happy until they found a way to make her happy.

She would say that the baby was not her brother, her step-mother was only her dad’s girl friend, her mom kept her brothers because of money issues. She had to hurt other’s. No one was looking close enough to see how hurt she was.

No one saw that they too had hurt her. Her mom went on with other relationships (trying to have the step dad in their lives that she thought her kids wanted). She couldn’t see that it was their mother that they needed. Their dad went on with his new family. Word sometimes were thrown back and forth between the two families. No one thought to say I’m sorry. I neglected your pain because I was blinded by my own. No one gave her pain a voice, and she did not know why she was hurting so badly.

Time healed her young heart somewhat, and she knew that she was blessed with more people who loved her than she would have been had it not been for her family stretching.

You see, stretching is not breaking. Her mother reminded her that the family just got bigger. Now she has two moms. One is the one who is her blood, and the other is one who is closer to her age and can understand some things in life that her mother may not know. She has a new brother she can love and set an example for. She has more uncles, mores aunts, more cousins, and more love than she would have had if her mom and dad had stayed together. She also had more grand parents than even most step- families, because her step-mother’s parents were divorced and involved in other relationships. More family member with pets than she would have had otherwise.

As time went on Marie and her brothers begin to understand that they were the core to so many people’s lives and hearts.

So as she grew up, she knew that she did not have to choose. She had two homes, and more love than she could ever ask for.

She became a mother, and she made it a point to show her kids that they had a very large family. That they never had to be sad or feel hidden behind other peoples problems. They always had someone who loves them to care for them. And she lived happily ever after. She was known as the best Holiday Cook ever to be born.

The End
