Patriotic poem written to the music in my head. |
Red, White & Blue Jessie'd heard stories since she was a girl, 'Bout how grandad went to war with the rest of the world, And left granny at home with three little kids. How proud granny was of what grandaddy did. Grandaddy said: Someday you'll understand why I have to be so far away from you. Serving my country under the shield of the red, white and blue. Mom and pop had their own point of view, Jessie's dad served in their town and church too. And though he never left home he always stayed true To the meaning behind the great red, white and blue. Now Jessie is married with kids of her own, And it's her husband fighting so far from home. A box full of letters tells her where he’s been, But she hasn’t heard his voice since Heaven knows when. Sometimes she's lonely and sad, but she's ever so glad, That she's got a man who makes her as proud as grandaddy made gran. Someday you'll understand why I have to be so far away from you, Serving my country under the shield of the red, white and blue. Jessie’s grandaughter’s getting married today, Nobody knows if the boy's here to stay. But it doesn't matter that Jessie's heart's torn, When the boy looks so handsome in dress uniform. Someday you'll understand why I have to be so far away from you Serving my country under the shield of the red, white and blue. |
