Prompt: Why did you desert me? |
“Well, my dear, you’re all settled now, so I’ll be on my way.” The old wizard spoke quite deliberately, ignoring the panic that so quickly settled over Shei’s face. “But Arros—I don’t know where I am! You can’t just whirl me across the planet and drop me off in the middle of nowhere! I’ll get lost—” “No need to worry, everything is prepared already.” Arros closed his eyes and began to concentrate on a spell, completely ignoring Shei’s protests. After a few moments, she stopped yelling and scowled at the stubborn wizard, knowing how futile it was to get Arros to hear anything while casting a spell. And then Arros disappeared. Shocked, Shei took deep breaths and refused to panic—the only thing the wizard had bothered to teach her. She bitterly regretted leaving her home to be his apprentice—or that was what she thought she would be. Apparently Arros didn’t think so. Scanning the horizon in all directions, Shei quickly concluded that she was quite alone in these rocky barren mountains, abandoned for no apparent reason with no supplies of any kind. “Oh Arros, why have you deserted me?” Shei mumbled, and sat down and cried. Eventually she became aware that someone was watching her. Actually, quite close. She didn’t bother to think how she knew it, for she could see no one. Gathering her scattered dignity about her, she dried her eyes and stood. Before her eyes, a small drab person seemed to appear out of nowhere. “Welcome,” he said. “What?” Shei looked angrily at her feet, then back up at his face. “Welcome to where?” He smiled. “Come with me,” he said. “Arros said to teach you.” Shei repeated hesitantly, “Arros said…?” He half-grinned again and nodded. “Arros said.” This time Shei smiled too. |
