Inspired by a memories of a close childhood friend
I tried to hold your hand on Thursdays, after
School, at the basketball court or ping-pong table or trampoline.
And playing truth or dare, your sister
Always asked for truth. I lied--
I loved you always. Always you knew
But I never said, and
We liked it better, without the shame of love.
Instead, we had my dorky sunglasses,
Your fake hunchback walk,
And a flat, flat Texas landscape,
Lit by rusty sunsets of summers past,
Where we almost flipped that ATV
Next to the cow in the ditch, and
You made me drive back slow.
