More Than All The Whole Wide World: Joe’s Song

Joe gets up each day to see
If he can be what he wants to be:
Like all the other boys and girls.
Puts on a shirt, shorts and socks
Waits for the bus, eats some rocks,
Climbs in his seat, plays with toys,
Like all the other girls and boys
More than all the whole wide world,
Like all the other boys and girls.

He likes recess, music, and gym
And people who come and play with him.
Like all the other boys and girls.
Arts and crafts are good to eat
Shoes and socks won’t stay on feet.
Swing and slide and bounce for joy
Like all the other girls and boys.
More than all the whole wide world
Like all the other boys and girls.

Flops on the floor with a great big grin
Doesn’t care about the mess he’s in.
Like all the other boys and girls
Teachers and therapists insist;
Joe wants to tell them “no, do this.”
He has sorrows, hopes and joys.
Like all the other girls and boys
More than all the whole wide world.
Like all the other boys and girls.

He wants to talk and laugh and play,
Tell a joke and make some noise
Like all the other girls and boys.
For “Yes!” his eyes get big and round;
He looks at you without a sound.
When he shrugs and looks away
“No!” is what he means to say.
More than all the whole wide world
Like all the other boys and girls.

Joe gets up each day to see
If he can be what he wants to be
More than all the whole wide world
--like all the other boys and girls.
