Mom Can I?

          “Where’s your brother?” Mom asked.

          “Don’t know.”

          “Where’s your Dad?”

          “Don’t know.”  I said again.

“Have you moved from that spot today?”

          “No.”

“Do you plan to do so today?”

“Yeah, when I go to Andrea’s house.  Where were you?”

“I was out shopping with your Aunt Patty.  Did you clean your room like I asked you to?” her eyes narrowed at me, trying to detect the lie.

“Yeah.” Lie detector evaded. “Did you buy me anything?” Subject changed.

“No I did not buy you anything.”

“Is it okay if I stay at Andrea’s tonight?”

“I don’t know. When will you be home?”

          “Tomorrow.”  She rolled her eyes.

“Didn’t you stay there last weekend?”

“Yes, Mom.  I stayed Friday night and she stayed here on Saturday.  Don’t you remember?  So can I?”

“Oh, okay, but I want you home tomorrow morning at ten so that you can do the rest of your chores.”

“Ah Mom.  Okay.  Fine.  Oh yeah, I think Jack and Dad are in the garage fighting over putting oil in the lawn mower.”

“Still?  Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

          “I forgot.”

“Right.  I love you.  Go to Andrea’s.  Be careful.”

“I love you too Mom, bye!”
