Based on Revelation 3:20 and the picture 'The Light of the World' by Holman Hunt.

Door of My Heart
A huge wooden door in a dark, dark city,
A city filled with misery and pity.
No one comes in and no one comes out,
The place that no one’s ever bothered about.
The empty alleyways and the empty streets,
Is all of the earth in this eternal sleep?
There’s no glimmer of hope, no shining light,
Just emptiness and silence – something’s not right.

Then you come along with a lantern in sight,
Your footsteps are steady, silent and light.
You know where you’re going - you don’t need a map,
You walk past the barriers, past all of the traps.
You get to the door, the door of my heart,
There’s no fancy doorbell, no flowers, no art.
Just thistles and weeds, climbing up and around,
It’s dirty and battered, like it’s never been found.

There’s a knock in the silence, a knock at my door,
It seems like it’s something I’ve been waiting for.
The door opens slowly, sticking and creaking,
I just stand there, doing nothing but weeping.
Then you step in and put a hand on my shoulder,
It’s like you’ve lifted a weight, or a boulder.
Your presence does something I cannot explain,
The walls of my heart are now clean, not stained.

Where there was darkness there now is light,
You have opened my eyes and given me sight.
It seems you’ve restored me through and through,
The only person to knock at my heart is you.
Stay with me forever, please don’t ever go,
If I kick or I shout, I want you to know:
Although my actions may not always shine,
I need you with me - keep your hand in mine.

One more thing I ask, please hear me out,
Don’t ever let me forget what your love is about.
