As an ambitious and very independent person, I wrote this poem as a high school student. |
Countless difficulties will I encounter each day As new obstacles are constantly placed in my way With an optimistic spirit, these problems I will meet One thing remains certain: these barriers I will defeat. Yet as I go about my days Fighting my battles in my own way I do things the only way I’ve ever known The only way I can be shown: The hard way. Step by step and day by day Little by little, I will make my way With my undying determination, I will not stop Slowly I will reach the top No matter how long the race or rugged the climb I’ll get there by taking one step at a time. People need to understand I don’t always want a helping hand Like a bird spreading its wings for the first time I have to be taught to find My own course and direction Instead of enduring persistent correction I need to dig my own trail To take charge and set sail Upon the waters of my ambitions Where I’ll find the confidence from within To follow my dreams. Perhaps I will never take the shorter road I may always carry the heavier load But as my strength increase from day to day I will carve my own path, I will make my own way. Though slower than most, I will get there in the end All the while, I won’t allow myself to give in To my feelings, insecurities, fears, and doubts For that is not what God intended for life to be about At times when I am frustrated and tempted to give up before I try The Lord gently lifts me and on His faithfulness I will rely. So with my right foot in front of my left The cold waters will I test I will move slowly at my own pace Anticipating the obstacles I must face For I know I can do anything I set my mind If I only take one step at a time. |
