IN THE NICK OF TIME

I remember the afternoon I came to visit you in the hospital,
After the rain had come and left you with pneumonia.
When I saw your frail. weak form, stretched out
Almost lifeless on that bed and
You gazed at me with pale, watery, dimming eyes
That reminded me of impending death
And you silently turned your  head away in shame.
And I sensed the embarrassment you felt at my
Seeing you in this dilemma.
I reach to comfort and embrace your disintegrating,
Motionless body.
Your eyes were sunken, bloodshot red from deep, tubercolosic cough that went on forever.
Then suddenly you became so feverish
And delirious that I thought your breath would leave
Your frail body and I thought I'd lose you
Because you couldn't go on.
I cried tears of river that day and perspired
Drops of pain at the thought of losiny you.
Remember you squeezed me faintly and I gazed
Long and hard in your big, brown eyes and aw...
Suddenly the stars;
And I said a prayer for you right then;
Did you realize that it was God's love that
Had cured you then, and miraculously brought you
to your feet and me to my knees.
Then I breathed  another prayer of sweet relief
Thanking God for sending his son just
...In the nick of time!!!
