Dentist chat - written for the Dialogue 500 contest
“Samantha, you must try to relax.”

“I’m trying Dr., you know needles scare me”

“I promise you won’t feel a thing. Now, open wide.  That’s good.  Just a little wider.  Ready?”

“Uh huh.”

“I’m going to pull on your cheek, let me know if you feel any discomfort.”

“I dan’t feel any d’scomfort yet.”

“Good. I’m going to release your cheek. Just relax. How was your summer?”

“My husband and I took a vacation to the Grand Canyon. It was a lot of fun until we rode the mules. You wouldn’t believe how narrow those...”

“You can keep going Ms. Miller, I’m just going to have a look at these back teeth here. Open wide. So you didn’t like the mules?”

“Those aths are ary narrow and it is ary scary. I whas to’d at…”

“There that wasn’t so bad was it? The Novocain should start to take effect in a few moments. Close your lips around this tube. Good. Did you do any rafting on your trip?”

“No, we didn’t get the chance to do any rafting. We were going to but my husbands mule…”

“If you just hold that thought for a second, I’m going to check to see how the numbing is coming along.  Open wide for me. Ok. Hold there. You can close. Did you take a helicopter ride over the canyon?”

“No, I am not very fond of flying and my husand didn’t want ta go if I didn’t go. We di - drived to the canon; took tee days.  My teets feel’n real’we mumb.”

“Good. You are almost ready. I’m just going to work on this upper right molar and then I’ll get the cavity filled for you.  So you didn’t get the chance to raft huh?”

“No, ike I s’ed, my husban’s mue was the jiteer’we type. It spoked real’we easah’we. Owe. Tat hurt.”

“Sorry Ms. Miller, I slipped. You shouldn’t have felt that though. Tell me if you can feel anything when I poke here.”

“Es, es, I eel tat. Owe.”
“Ok. I will have to be more careful. You ready? Good. Tell me more about your trip Ms. Miller.”

“Ike I whas sa’ing, my husban’s mue whas scar’ed of…”

“Could you close slightly for me please. Right there. Good. I’m going to fill the cavity now. Why don’t you tell me more about your husbands mule.”

“I’m rying but ew won’t et me inish.”

“What? You’re finished. That sounded like a nice vacation Ms. Miller. You will also be glad to know you’re good to go.  My assistant is just going to finish up here with you.  It couldn’t have gone better and you did really well. I’ve got to go see another patient but I will see you in six months Ms. Miller.”

“ey doc, aout the mue… ah nev’er eind.”
