She was sitting at the bar looking at her empty glass. She was debating refilling it but was holding off. Getting drunk by her self wasn’t a lot of fun. She was supposed to be drinking with Teela and Garrity but Garrity had been forced to stay at work late and Teela had cancelled. So far she’d turned down three offers for company and it looked like she was about to have to start a brawl with a fourth. The bar was noisy and one of the more seedy places in the city proper. She could smell the illegal drugs in the air. It was one of Tain’s favorites. Absently she wondered what he was doing. She was here on the hope that she might be able to avoid any but her own Barrani. She was in a pair of leather pants that fit her way to well for her own comfort and a long sleeved blue button up. Which also fit her way to well for her comfort, and, as was being proven, way to low cut. Every one in the bar was human, so none knew what the mark on her cheek meant. If they had no one would have bothered her. If she’d been in Nightshade, she’d have had the whole bar to herself. She swatted a hand that fell on her shoulder. The man tried again but stopped short. As Kaylin hadn’t drawn this was a surprise. She could almost smell the man’s fear. Then she caught another smell. Honey and musk. It smelled disturbingly like Nightshade, but as the man hadn’t bolted yet it probably wasn’t the fief lord. She could guess who it was. Now she really did need a second drink. Jaklis sat on the other side as the man moved away. He motioned the tender for a drink. Kaylin seconded him. Her drink was much stronger then his. Constant outings with Teela and Tain had given Kaylin a high alcohol tolerance. Most days she avoided drinking though. Teela irritatingly told her she had a control issue. That had started a brawl that had gotten all three of them kicked out of a bar permanently. The tender had threatened to call the hawks on them. Until some one pointed out that they were the hawks. She snorted at the memory. Tain had ended up the looser in that fight. “No company applies to you too.” She said casually; a casualty she didn’t feel. She downed the shot. It burned as it went down. She hadn’t asked what he’d given her, just asked for something strong. “I thought the hawks would frown on you starting the brawl.” He said sipping on his drink. Kaylin laughed. He raised a perfect eyebrow over a blue-green eye. He looked uncannily like nightshade, when he did that. It sort of creeped her out. Not nearly enough though. “Over half the brawls I’ve gotten in have been with hawks.” She said and ordered another drink. The tender was wary of Jaklis as he gave her the drink. Kaylin sipped on this one. She was starting to feel a buzz. He was dressed down for a Barrani. Cloth pants in a dark purple with a red shirt. That showed of a lean and long body. His black hair was kept relatively short. It was pulled back in a que. She was tempted to pull it down. Definitely no more alcohol tonight. “If your going to ask about Nightshade” she said. “Don’t. I am not the person to ask.” He seemed surprised. She sighed. “I also know better then to tell you, even if I was capable of doing so. I know what the results and consequences will be. I also know I wouldn’t be the one to pay the price.” Every thing had a price. You never got anything for free. Kaylin had learned that lesson early. And the price of her life had been paid by her children. On second thought she did need another drink She closed her eyes and saw their faces. She sighed. The drink the tender gave her was fizzing. She cocked an eyebrow. “You look like you need it.” Was his answer to her unasked question. She sniffed it warily, but couldn’t identify the drug in it. She gave a ‘What the hell’ shrug and downed it. With in moments she was feeling better. She could see how one could get addicted to drugs. “Someone’s going to be mad at me for saying this, but if you want to know about Nightshade, perhaps you should ask him.” She knew he’d been told to not go near Nightshade, but telling a child not to do something was the best way to get them to do it. Something she had a feeling he former Lord of Green wouldn’t figure out till he had children himself. By which point she’d probably already be dust. It was too bad. Barrani children were rare, and Kaylin would have liked to see one. “They told me not to, yet you’re telling me the opposite. Why?” she saw the curiosity in his eyes. “Because the longer you secret yourself away from the truth the worse it is when you find it out in the end.” Kaylin stood then, even managed to stand up straight. “I’m not Barrani, don’t expect me to treat you the way they do. You certainly didn’t pick your parents. In fact I bet they didn’t even pick themselves.” She decided that that was a good time to leave. The bastard followed her. It was frustrating but she didn’t blame him. She had often wondered what her father had been like. He’d died shortly before Kaylin was born. She also wondered what her life would have been like if her mother had survived. She didn’t dwell on it to much. In spite of the sadness at her loss, those years with Steffi and Jade had been some of the happiest in her life, short though it was. She would never have her own children, not now. The sins of the parents. She thought bitterly. “Why are you following me?” She asked him he gave her a Barrani shrug. Which she translated as he had nothing better to do. She heard the peel of thunder and felt the rain drops. It had been overcast all day and had decided to not only make her miserable but miserable and wet. She stood there a moment and thought on how every one always scrambled out of the rain. As if by moving faster they would somehow become less wet then every one else. Kaylin had always loved the rain. It smelled of a freshness almost never found in the fiefs. She noticed Jaklis under an overhang. She laughed. “This storms to big for you to wait it out under the overhang. You’re just going to have to get wet.” He gave her an irritated look. She laughed again; he was slightly damp and obviously didn’t like it “You look like a drowned rat” he said. “Have you even seen a drowned rat?” he threw some thing at her, she suspected it was some sort off rock. She dodged; he hadn’t really been trying to hit her. He probably would have if he had been trying. She picked one up and lobbed it back. She caught him in the leg just above the knee. She bolted as he went after her. Five minutes later he hadn’t caught her and was now just as wet as she was. Wetter actually. Apparently no one had warned him about puddles. She started laughing and he chuckled. “They must have a hard time keeping up with you.” “They usually don’t try” she said. She headed down a side street. She was near a bar she liked. It wasn’t clean but it was dry, and they could stay until the storm wore off. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Teela stood before the open window in a silken robe. She felt bad about canceling on Kaylin, but she had needed her time alone. Which had eventually not been her own time. She looked at the body on her bed. He was human, but that surprisingly didn’t matter. She could see the scars crossing his body. Whatever the wolves had had him doing it had not been pleasant. She wondered if he missed the shadows. She knew he did, but he’d given it up to come to Kaylin’s side. When the Wolf Lord had asked if he wanted to come back he had let kaylin choose. she wondered what he had done to her. She wanted to ask but wouldn’t. Kaylin wouldn’t appreciate her killing him. As if sensing her looking at him he opened one black eye. “I don’t like any of this.” She said to him. “Which is why you’ve stayed up so long?” he asked. “In spite what you may think. Kaylin really can take care of herself.” He stretched out even further and she watched the play of muscles absently. “It’s not whether she can, but if she will.” She placed a hand on her head “she’s getting too involved with our politics. She has no idea what she’s doing, and I would like to see her live her life, short though it may be” the whole thing was giving her a headache. Kaylin was good at causing chaos and havoc, but that wasn’t acceptable out side the fiefs or the hawks. “It’s not that bad.” “Yet. Nightshades children are not kind, and they will rip her to shreds if they catch her screwing Tain.” Severn shook his head as she said that. “She’s human, and she didn’t want his attention, and even Nightshade knows this. Yes he will use it against her if he wants to keep her, but it has been six months since he marked her, and he doesn’t appear interested.” Severn had sat up on the bed his legs crossed, she sighed he really didn’t know nightshade if he thought that. “You worry too much.” He said. He stood as she turned back to the window. Night had fallen and the dark purple of the sunset had faded. He tugged the robe off her shoulders, he gently let it fall to the floor. She felt his hands on her hips. He was almost as tall as she was. She leaned her head back against his shoulder, arms going backwards over his neck. She felt his hands rub her sides. She wondered at how easy it would be to let him have the control. She almost wanted to give it to him. All the restraint she had all the politics and the games she forced her self into wore on her day in and day out. She felt him press closer and smiled. She turned and let him press her back against the wall. She saw the desire in his eyes. She was always surprised at how expressive his eyes were. There was something haunting about them. Like there was something he wanted to forget but wouldn’t. She’d seen the same look in Kaylin’s eyes when the girl had first wandered out of the fiefs. She let him kiss her and on an impulse let him take the lead. She felt his hand run down her belly felt the pleasure as he moved to the side, taking one of her nipples into her mouth as she started to moan. Felt his cock against her hip. He held her against the wall when she started to drop. She could feel the pleasure building felt it turn into ecstasy. Her arm was around his neck hand in his black hair. She felt the pleasure spike as he slipped his fingers inside, taking his time. Felt the ache deep down that told her what she needed, that made her forget what she’d been thinking about. She felt the pressure start, felt the moan in her chest. He slipped his fingers out and she groaned in protest. She saw his grin and snarled at him. He turned her around and pinched her nipples. She felt herself press back against him. He pulled back slightly. He continued to finger her from behind she felt the tightening again felt the rush of pleasure as he let her orgasm. He slipped inside and she felt him stretch her tight. He thrust a few times then pulled out. She snarled, he laughed and started again, then when her frustration was at its highest he slipped inside her again. It felt so good, so filling. He started thrusting and she started to groan. Felt the pleasure slowly build. He put his hand on her belly and pulled her almost upright. She felt herself tighten around him. It tore a moan from her lips. He moved just a little faster, his breathing getting a little harsher. She slipped her arms over his head as he thrust into her. Heard his moan match hers. The pleasure was now so exquisite she felt like screaming. She almost did. She felt herself slowly falling ver the edge heard his gasp as he started to orgasm. Felt her own body tighten shockingly hard. She did scream then, heard him join her. Teela leaned against the wall feeling him pressed tightly to her back. In spite of what she’d initially thought his slow taking of her had been exactly what she needed. She wondered how he’d known. He stood pulling a hand out of her hair. A hand she hadn’t realized had been there. He didn’t say anything, didn’t need to. She needed sleep. She hadn’t been to sleep in almost two days, and the need had finally made itself known. She would have fallen as she went toward the bed except Severn had his arm around her waist. She crawled into the bed and felt him slip in beside her. She turned towards him, laying her head on his arm. He slipped his other arm around he waist and then the blackness took her. |
