I look out of my grey white window, watching static, searching for the shade
Looking for the Colour
inspired by Katie

I look out of my grey-white window,
Watching static, I search for the shade
That’s not in the chiffon stroking my cheek
Despite its multicoloured hue.
That small, lost colour that all of us seek.

Rooting through the sky for the colour,
For the faint blush across stormy skin.
The rain is falling in white-blue paint
Splattering the world in patterns.
But the colour’s absent now, not even faint.

So I search through amber spotlights that
Dull the dark, creating electric shadow.
And I can’t see that little colour there,
Despite the fragmented glow.
The colour doesn’t seem to fall anywhere.

I look in case it’s there on a visit,
Whistle-stopped by between the dim folds
Of brittle black-grey tarmac and cement.
Perhaps it’s captured in the wind?
But I look and I realise it hasn’t been sent.

I examine water-colour mountains
That slice open powder puff clouds and pull
Out their stuffing. Yet it can’t be seen,
Not that one colour that I still can’t find.
Not among the snow pink-lilacs and blue-greens.

I wonder if the fables are true,
And I look in the glass. Maybe it’s real
And I’ll see it look out my tinted eyes.
But it no longer lingers there it seems,
So I return my gaze to the colourless skies.

So where can the elusive hue be?
I search once more through the world of tone
And colour and shade. But can’t find the one.
That one colour long sought,
The colour of hope that I fear now is gone.
