Ever been lonely?
Loneliness is a single brittle leaf
As it is falling from the tree
Loneliness means the same thing as empty
It’s the deep and desperate need
It’s the craving
That eats up your insides
And it drives you to cry
But you simply cannot
‘cause your eyes are too dry

Loneliness is a couch meant for two
But only filled by one
It’s the vacant air around you in the mall
Where you walk just for something to do
It’s the night
When you want to sleep
But you won’t
Because you know the next day
You’ll be alone

Loneliness is the journal you keep
That you hope – one day – someone will read
Loneliness is the poem you write for me
Where you spill out your heart and hope I agree
It’s the smile
That you make
And the touch you create
For the chance of one minute more
That I will stay

Loneliness is a car-ride to Maine
With a ghost as your co-pilot
Loneliness is a demand for attention
Even if that attention brings pain
It’s the wound
That you nurse
An unbreakable curse
And this silence
Is likely the worst

Loneliness looks just like your phone book
Ten-billion numbers, all of them fake
It’s your ringing cell-phone, unable to reach him
And the eventual nine calls you’ll make
It’s the step
Of your feet
While your family is asleep
And you dance in your bedroom
Alone

Loneliness is a single brittle leaf
Alone
Static
No home
Will it ever end
For you?
