People asked you what you did and the truth sounds like a lie?
Normally you contain your emotions, but on that particular day you let them go on yourself. No one asks you why you did it. Are they expecting you to lie to them? You told them that you got angry so you punched yourself, resulting in a black eye. But they think that your significant other did it and you’re covering it up. You’re afraid for your boyfriend/ girlfriend. Paranoia consumes your being, scared that others will hold Salem witch trials looking for your mate. Afraid that they’ll take away the only shield you have, the only light, the only hope from the darker part of yourself and impale it. You end up thinking that in that moment of emotional intensity you should’ve ran into the streetlight instead maybe you would’ve fallen on your back looking at the sky as an Alice in Wonderland-esque dream started playing through your mind. But the pole wasn’t good enough for you, fear shunned you away, you were afraid that you would break your neck, back, or something else resulting in permanent injury. Now you look back in regret as people look at you like you’re lying when you’re telling the truth, concluding in you feeling misunderstood, a collection of broken glass inside of your head that you get cut on every time the memory arises.
You really did punch yourself in the face. They just think otherwise because they've seen things like this before and the person wasn't being entirely truthful. They said they ran into a door or some other clumsy mistake when really their parents or abusive lover had done it. You start to get depressed because of this and want to disappear until everything calms down, until the black eye disappears. You regret your decision and the pole seems like the better option because that was the alternative.
