A poem I wrote after my elderly grandmother sent me an afghan she knitted for me

Thank you aszreal for the pretty purple ribbon!

A Package from Grandma

I received a package from my grandmother today.
I haven’t heard from her in months--here’s what she had to say …
She said, “I thought you’d like to see something I made for you.
“I would have sent it sooner, but I only just got through.”

I opened up the box to see a knitted afghan there.
She’d folded it up nice and tight with not an inch to spare.
With yellow, purple, green and blue and just a touch of pink
To make this took persistence, and it really made me think.

When was the last time I sat down with such determination?
Never! That’s when--my M.O. is give up in frustration.
I want my things done yesterday--I’m more prone to distraction
For me to start a project I need instant satisfaction.

In my mind I saw her there, her knitting needles flying
Ignoring her arthritic pain, her love for me undying.
I felt ashamed--for I did not hold gram in high regard
Enough to buckle down and send a simple greeting card.

Through the years I’ve been caught up in life and simply living
That I forgot to take a breath and do a little giving.
So before I go to bed tonight I know that I’ll sleep better
If I sit down and send my gram a lovely thank you letter.

For sometimes it’s the little things that have the most affect
Remind us people love us, and with family reconnect.
So for those of you who could be a little kinder
Perhaps your gram will send to you a small knitted reminder.
