OUR BEST FRIEND.


Friends they come, and friends they go.
They’re right there with you, rain, hail or snow.
There’s only one friend who was there all the time,
And I shall describe her through stanza and rhyme.

She stuck with us strong for about fourteen years,
And when she departed, it brought many tears.
No one was as smart, as kind or as tough,
And when we had fun, it got pretty rough.

We’d go for long walks on the white sandy beach,
And run into water so cold that she’d screech.
But then we’d lay down and dry off in the sun,
She’d sleep and we’d talk or reflect on our fun.

We took her to Tassie, along with another,
They fought all day long like sister and brother.
The good times were great and we had lots of those
But when they were bad, we stayed on our toes.

We did love our fishing, near went every day,
Just go down the creek, catch a meal/entrée.
Had to tell her to sit, and stay, and wait,
Or else she’d sneak up and eat all your bait.

The years went by and she started to grow
Into a big bully, we’ll both have you know.
For we had bought another, same colour as her.
Shiny black coat, gold traces of fur.

The new one was small, eight years her younger,
Was scared to eat food and was forced into hunger.
The old one was boss, she got her own way.
Would steal the pups blankets all night and all day.

As years went on they became best mates.
The old one played mother and opened the gates,
For the young one who followed her every footprint
And taught her to bark and growl in one stint.

The old one was Buddy, she was the best friend
That we’ve ever had and she fought ‘til the end.
Until one day she could walk no more
Went for her last drive and settled the score.

She had a good life, a long one at that
I still reach down now to give her a pat.
Been nearly two years since she met her end.
Our dear dog, Buddy. We love you, old friend.
