A long time ago there had never been snow.
Where Snowflakes Came From

There once was a time, a long time ago,
A time when no one had ever seen snow.
The earth was new and beautiful, you see.
Bright colored butterflies covered each tree.

The butterflies were friends of every child there,
They laughed and they played without worry or care.
Each butterfly and child, that lived at that place,
Spent the whole day with a smile on their face.

As each day began, a rainbow would rise,
With colors to match the bright butterflies.
The children would gaze as the rainbow came out,
Then return to their play with a loud, joyful shout.

But one day, as happens in 'most everyone's life,
Something happened that brought sadness and strife.
The rainbow was stolen and taken away,
The children then ceased to laugh, and to play.

They said such mean and horrible things,
They hit the butterflies, which hurt their wings.
They poked each other with long pointy sticks,
They made fun of their friends and did nasty tricks.

The butterflies knew a rainbow was needed,
To bring back the joy that had been depleted.
They devised a plan of what they must do.
To recover the joy, into the sky they flew.

They climbed higher and higher; the air made them cold,
But the thought of the children had made them bold.
They formed a rainbow where one should be,
Hoping the children would look up and see.

The children looked up, saw the rainbow there.
But, saw no butterflies and were filled with despair.
They realized their friends, out of absolute love,
Had given their lives, to make the rainbow above.

Then, something happened, which brought laughter and mirth,
The butterflies fluttered back to the earth.
Oh, they couldn't laugh, or play anymore.
They weren't even butterflies, like they were before.

The colors that matched the rainbow on high
Had been left behind to brighten the sky.
They weren't alive, and through the long night,
The butterflies had turned the purest white.

They fluttered to earth, to ground, trees and lakes,
The butterflies were now big, fluffy snowflakes.
The children giggled with glee and delight.
They made 'snow butterflies', a glorious sight!

So, in the winter when snow starts falling,
And you hear the North Wind start his calling,
Remember the butterflies and the deed they did,
To bring back the joy for each little kid.
