I try to be honest. I think that wearing a cap helps me to remember who it is that I try to emulate in life. And, for me, that’s reason enough.

Looking at all those hats in my hat closet the other day got my ADHD goin’, and I suddenly started thinking about all the other “hats” that I wear in my life. I made a list of just a few of these hats, as well. In no particular order, except as they come to my mind:

I am a man, I am a Son. I am a step-father. I am a brother. I am an Uncle. I am a Cousin. I am a Nephew. I am a friend. I am a Christian. I am a student. I am a minister. I am a musician. I am a writer of Novels. I am a Conductor. I am a Composer. I am an Arranger. I am a Lecturer. I am an Organist. I am a Pianist. I am a Concert Artist. I am a performer. I am a Teacher. I am a Counselor. I am an adventurer. I am a sky diver. I am a pilot. I am a Scuba Diver. I am a Journalist. I am a traveler. I am a Computer Programmer. I am a Software Designer/Developer. I am a project manager. I am a Systems Analyst. I am a Theologian. I am a Minister of Music. I am a greeter, listener, and confidante. I am a shepherd. I am an Evangelist. I am a public speaker. I am a singer. I am an actor. I am a dramatist. I am a volunteer. I am a humorist (although rarely funny). I am a selfless giver. I am a good man. I am a renter. I am a user of utilities. I am a subscriber. I am a driver. I am a saver. I am an investor. I am a reader. I am over-accomplished, and under-achieved. I am sane. I am mentally sound. I am a payer of bills. I am an earner of income. I am far away. I am close at hand. I am trusted. I am loyal. I am devoted. I am a carrier of the trash. I am a cook. I am a Nurse. I am a care giver. I am an Insurance Agent. I am a Law School Graduate. I am a Seminary Graduate. I am a holder of Degrees. I am published. I am an Award winner. I am a citizen. I am a veteran. I am an American. I am a Democrat. I am, rightfully, a defender of Freedom. I am a Legionnaire. I am a collector of many things. I am a collector of hats. I am honest. I am a liar. I am brave. I am strong. I am afraid. I am weak. I am reverent. I am clean. I am morally sound. I am morally corrupt. I am a Boy Scout. I am a Demolay. I am a member of “Up with People!” I am a Missionary. I am a Legislator. I am an Activist. I am devoted to just causes. I am the advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. I am a lover. I am loved. I am more than I know. I am all that I have ever been. I am so much more than I see. I am so much yet to become. I am me.

In this, only a partial list, I wear 120 hats!! No wonder I have so many.hats. And, oh my, how the list could go on. (I am a person of joy. I am a person of sorrow. I am a happy person. I am sad. And, like that if you want to get down to the nitty and/or the gritty.)

From our first breath of life, we have hats that we wear. I have them, and you have them, too. I believe that those things we learn, we become. These hats all go into the mix of who, exactly, it is that we are. Some of the hats we wear, we hope others will notice. Others, we really hope no one notices. Did you ever see a hat you didn’t notice? Really?

In this study, one of my challenges to you is to make a list just as I have done. Consider all the hats you wear in your life. If you will, I am certain it will shock you. And, if you REALLY want to see someone who wears hats, talk to a teenager in High School! Now, There’s a person that knows about hats! (I know, because my three always kept “borrowing” mine as they went through High School!)

Study Break #2

What hats do you particularly enjoy wearing? What hats do you dislike, and wish you didn’t have to wear? (One of these for me is when I have to wear the hat that says “Bearer of Sad News!")

Are there hats you just truly hate? I have some. Write a list of all the hats you wear that you don't like to wear, or wish you didn't have to wear, or just plain hate! Make your list, and then continue reading with the next chapter when you are ready. Take your time with these exercises. If you haven't made the first list, go back and make it. Then, come to this second break, and make this list as well. Don't worry, it isn't being graded. This is just between you and me. You can even burn the list after we are done, if you want to.

I'll see you in the next chapter.

Soli Deo Gloria!.
