This poem was one of my earliest and inspired by nothing more than my imagination.
A girl named Jill lived on a hill
down near Willow Lake.
She fell in love with a man from town,
a man whose name was Jake.
Jake met Jill upon the hill
one moonlit summer night.
They shared a night of ecstasy
and woke to morning's light.

Now Jake, he had a problem,
a secret to conceal.
He was a covert gamblin’ man,
a cardsharp known as “Deal.”
Deal played a lot and won at most,
and lost, but just a few.
While he flirted with Lady Luck
Jill learned a child was due.
So Jake and Jill made plans to wed
down by the garden gate,
but back in town Jake met a clown,
a drunken man named, “Fate”.
He had a gun, aimed it and said,
“Deal, ya owe me mate!”
Jake turned around,
Fate shot him down.
He did not hesitate.

Now a lad who looks like Dad
roams hills near Willow Lake.
From what I hear, his mother, Jill
still sheds her tears for Jake
So to the ones who do not wish
to see the Pearly Gate;
I say, “Do not deal with Lady Luck
nor test the hand of fate”
