I was literally poised in thin air. I was going to fly, or fall. The journey had been pleasant. Everything felt fine. We hardly experienced turbulence, the seatbelt sign was always turned off. We roamed about the cabin freely, enjoying the flight, snacking on the complimentary food, relaxing. Suddenly, and without warning from the captain, we hit a rough spot. The seatbelt sign turned on immediately and I hardly had time to find my seat before the plane started jerking and I lost my footing. Things went haywire. The pressure went out and the masks fell from their compartments. I was gagging and I couldn’t reach one. I couldn’t get back into my seat, the plane was moving uncontrollably, my heart was pounding in my chest, my cheeks were flushed, I couldn’t breathe. Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped. There was utter silence. I waited. It was then that the plane was poised in thin air. I wondered if the flight would continue as peacefully as it had begun or if that was just a taste of what was to come. Before I knew it my worst nightmare came alive, we were falling, diving fast, losing altitude every millisecond. It would be mere minutes until we crashed into something, exploding into a thousand little pieces. All was lost. I was utterly confused as I limped out of the wreckage. Somehow I could still go on, and yet pieces of me were left with the fallen plane, the lost flight. It was over before it had even begun.
