Flying low over the land, devouring all in its path, the dragon searched for gold it will never use. A horrible creature to behold, the beast has tough, iron-like scales that will never be pierced. Men flee from its wrath; whole civilizations are destroyed by its force. All are watching to see if anyone will come to contest its power. Waiting, hoping, are men for the day of deliverance. Only one will come, says the story of old, who will be able to defeat the beast. That person will be named Chris. The hero foretold of old, to organize the civilization of mankind and to defeat the dragon. This will free the world for the next hundred years, until by chance another dragon enters into the world of man. FIGHT TO THE LAST… 50 years later… Chris was born into the family of Groundwalker, with his twin sister Christy. Chris grew to be an exceedingly strong man; killing any monster that stood in his path. Every man heard of Chris. From east to west the legend spread. Everyone was waiting for the day Chris would rise up to unite mankind and slaughter the dragon. When Chris came of age, he geared up for his battle with the dragon. His family accompanied him to the easternmost part of the continent. They stayed in the only town close to the cave. The rest of his historic expedition was on his own. When he finally reached the dragon lair, he was itching for a battle. Boldly he entered the cave. Suddenly, the dragon charged at Chris. He dove out of the way just in time. Flying in a spiral, swooping motion the dragon breathed its fire at Chris and all around him. For some reason he couldn’t hit Chris. It was as if Chris wore a special armor. The battle was long and glorious; from afar it looked like fireworks. Back in town, Christy was worrying about her brother. She made up her mind to go see if Chris had won. She started on her journey with her equipment to protect her from any monsters she may encounter on the road. Meanwhile, Chris was getting tired. He had shot a whole quiver of arrows and was now onto his spear. The dragon’s scales were too tough for the arrows to perforate. Chris stabbed at the dragon again and again, seeming to hit its vital organs. Still, the dragon scale was too tough to pierce. Tirelessly he pounded away at the dragon. Now, running almost entirely on adrenalin, Chris realized he was slowly winning the battle. If only he could remain strong. Yet as time wore on, Chris became weary and less alert. That is when the dragon flung its tail around, hitting Chris in the head and knocking him out. Just then Christy entered. She noticed Chris, lifeless on the floor, with the dragon moving in for the kill. She seized the moment while the dragon was distracted and ran towards it with a burst of strength never to behold. She rushed forward and jumped on the dragon. It let out a terrific roar of anguish as she hit him again and again with her sword. Then, as its head reared one last time, she plunged her sword into its throat. With that blow, the dragon staggered and fell to the ground, dead. Christy put her battle scarred brother on her horse and carried him back to town. As she reached home she was greeted as a hero by all, except her family. They believed the prophecy was clear, that Chris was to have killed the dragon and that he would have succeeded…eventually. They believed she changed history for the worse because she killed the dragon, not Chris. When Chris awoke and heard the dragon was dead, and that his sister had struck the final blow, he was elated. He explained to his family, that indeed the prophecy had come true…the whole prophecy… defeating the dragon was only part of the prophecy. The whole prophecy was that civilization would be united. By Christy uniting with her brother to kill the dragon it united men and women into a stronger bond then their civilization had had before. It showed that together, men and women could now conquer any foe. |
