An intro to the 'the Frenchman' series of short stories. Hopefully into a book.
In The Unexpected Patron we stumble across a man known only as the Frenchman to his employers, as he hangs from a hidden museum deep in the Swedish Alps, known as Tributen av Biblisk, or the Museum of Biblical Tributes.
His target is a different type - a highly trained and highly dangerous thief.

The Frenchman has been paid to make sure that the thief does escape with the item he is stealing, but is killed somehow on his way out. Perhaps shot in a 'gun fight' with a security officer, or having an 'accident'. The Employers don't mind, just that the man dies with his loot.

We enter...

The Unexpected Patron

The plan had gone to shit nearly four hours before, and the shit was deep down his throat now. He knew it. The Frenchman hung from a long rafter which trailed down into the courtyard. The museum was nearly sixty acres in length and width, just the building itself.

Hidden away in the Swedish Alps, Tributen av Biblisk had been buried deep for decades, only known to the wealthiest and most powerful. To think the Frenchman had been here, warmed what remained of his heart.

Now, as he sat watching his target escape unhindered from the secret museum, he knew what he had to do. He might even take some gain from it. Striking up the courage to perform such a feat, though, was no easy task. For a normal man.

The target stopped suddenly. He bent over. The rifle. The Frenchman knew the sound of metal upon ground. The AWP rifle had fallen off the roof and onto the cement below. The target must be seeing it's remains now and forming his own plan.

The Frenchman raised himself from the rafter and mounted the roof ledge. He took the pistol from it's zip-lock baggy and loaded it - quietly. The gun was raised and ready even before he heard the tell-tale voice of an on-coming civillian.

The security guard turned 'round the bend only to be met by an exhale of silenced gunfire, spewing his naive brain across the roof scaffold. The Frenchman checked his Night Watchman's badge. It read, 'Steve'. An out-of-towner. He supposed it would be best to arm American's and other non-Europeans at the museum of which they were hiding from their continental allies.

He plugged the man twice more, once in the stomach and once in the shoulder. As well, he shot two decoy rounds into the scaffold wood behind him - misses. Should the policia come across him, and the Frenchman knew they would, they would suspect the thief of the untidy murder. Check one.
