I will try to make these entries satisfactorily inviting. They should say, "Welcome to a new world. But as you enter, you may instead find this world will enter into you. Now then, close your eyes and 'look' around you--"
Please note: As you will notice, I have relied heavily--in fact, entirely, I think--on the websites Wikipedia and Answers.com from which to gather my information. I've repeatedly avoided copying entire phrases word for word, but I admit I have not double-checked my facts and definitions against any other sources. I also must admit that my chosen sources are not impeccable. I understand that there is some reluctance among certain schools against allowing students to cite Wikipedia as a reference in their "works cited" or bibliography pages. And I suppose it can be risky to take as gospel the information derived from only a single source, without backups or second opinions. It's probably as potentially misleading as it is to rely on one's own intellect alone--or, conversely, on one's own emotions, or "gut feelings," alone--in the process of making an important decision.
You are welcome to challenge, comment on, or add to any entries posted here, as well as look up the information yourself in your preferred source or sources. I do not intend to state the information I've included here as the final, irrefutable word. I hope that these entries will, instead, spark or provide continuing fuel for your--OK, for our--diverse curiosities. It might even provide a little fun. I welcome virtually every discussion and any new allies in furthering the discovery of new facts offered here, not only in breadth or variety but in depth.
