Hunting

The large man in bloody coveralls peered into the darkness.

“Carl,” he called, “CARL, Where are you?”

“I’m over here,” his brother, answered, “around the back, do you see anything?”

“No, nothing out here. Look carefully, we don’t want any mistakes now.”

Stumbling over a low bush, Carl swore. “Shit! Damn it, it’s dark out here, where the hell are the flashlights?”

“God damn it Carl, be careful and pay attention! You better not let the varmints get away!”

“Oh, relax Billy,” Carl giggled, “We’re a hundred miles from anyone or anything. They’re not going anywhere.”

“Oh yeah? Remember the one that got away last month?”

“That was different,” Carl said, “it was daytime and we were out on the highway then.”

“I don’t care, Carl,” Billy said, “We still have to be careful. Come around here, we’ll search grid by grid.”

“Okay, I’ll be right there, soon as I get a flashlight.” Carl scanned the area once more, then went to the front door of the abandoned service station.

As soon as he disappeared inside, the two hidden forms slowly slid deeper into the bushes.

“We’ll crawl down that ravine,” David whispered in Laura’s ear, “then we’ll try and make our way out to the highway.”

“Okay,” Laura shivered, “I’m scared David, what if they find us?”

Ducking down at the sound of the door opening, the two dark forms froze in place as the blood drenched man was illuminated by the light from the open door.

“I know Laura,” David squeezed her arm, “just move slow and quiet.”

“David, you heard the stories,” Laura hissed, “several people have disappeared out here. They said were never found. We shouldn’t have come this way.”

Just as the frightened couple prepared to dash down the ravine, a large bloody hand reached out and grabbed Laura by the hair.

“BILLLLY,” Carl howled, “I founnnnd them!”
