Two people and a dog alone together forever? |
We had been sleeping in an old abandoned bomb shelter I had found, when it happened. An unknown force had launched a nuclear attack on the U.S.A, catching everyone off guard. We heard the news on a cheap radio we'd dug out of a dumpster. The shelter was about 8' by 12', and I had furnished it as comfortably as possible. There was an old air matress I had found and patched in the corner. I had hung an old sheet around as a sort of wall. Against one wall was a was a small campstove, some milk crates serving as a pantry, and a few dishes. On the other wall there was a makeshift chair that doubled as the dog's bed. I had just finished a job picking fruit, so we had gone out and loaded up on supplies. We had a month's worth of food at least, and plenty of water. Four cartons of cigarettes and a half pound of weed. All we had to do was wait. The first couple of days we spent playing cards and talking to pass the time. After about the third day we began getting restless. The shelter had begun to stink of urine and feces, but we knew we couldn't open the door. We spent two weeks crammed inside before I opened the hatch. |
