Petty differences always resurface
On Easter Sunday, around our table
Negative thoughts and connotations
Meander through family members
Like dirty river water
"Kill the sarcasm," one would quip
"Just say what's on your mind," another would bellow
I stay quiet while this goes on
Harangued, harassed, ridiculed
Going for broke this year, I think
Finally will speak up and throw caution to the wind
Ending my silence, long overdue
Did they really think it wouldn't come to this?
Courage building up inside me as I open my mouth
"Bread rolls, anyone?" I muster
Ashamed, deflated, I played with my peas
