The beginning of a story I'm working on!
To my dear friend:

I’m so glad you finally had a chance to meet him. Yes, I already know the powers you felt in him. He’s going to be one of the best in the business. With the powers he holds, he’s going to need the best mentor possible to help him harness that ability. I wish I could be there, but sadly my time has run out. I’m sure you know where this is going!
Don’t worry; I know your past; even the parts you haven’t told me about. I have full confidence in your abilities as a teacher, even if you don’t! I’ve taught you so many things and I know you’ll be able to pass them on to him. So I’m asking, not as your mentor but as your friend, to train him in the way of the Guardian.
I have something else for you. A little mystery I’m sure you will find intriguing and will answer most of your questions about me. I left seven clues behind that will help you; the first clue is in this envelope.
Trust yourself & trust God and you will be okay!

Your friend forever,
Evelyn

PS: You’re partially correct about the watch!

-------------------------------------------------
To my favorite:

I wish I had more time to spend with you to watch you grow up. It has always been my greatest desire to teach you everything I know. Sadly, you already know that’s not possible. But, before I go, I leave you with two gifts to help you on your own journey. The first is a trinket that I picked up on my own adventures; thought you might like it because it looked “cool”. The other item is more of a secret. Don’t worry about it too much; just guard it well and you’ll know when to use it.
You are a very special young man and full of abilities and gifts that you aren’t even aware of yet. Remember always stay hopeful and be strong! Even though I’m no longer here, I will always watch and protect you!

                    With deep love,
                    E.G.

-------------------------------------------------

A beautiful West Texas sunset had appeared in the western sky as the autumn day began to end. The sky had fluffy clouds that reflected the dark purple and red colors the sun was emitting. This was the type of sunset that could calm even the most nervous of persons. Two people were standing on the porch of a countryside mansion and stared in silence as the sun slowly set into the distant horizon. Fields of cotton were the only things that could be seen for miles; even the city was too far away to upset that perfect sunset. A gentle breeze blew threw the fields and was refreshing on a hot evening. The tall gentleman was leaning along the post of the porch and finally spoke, “Are they coming?”
An elderly woman who was standing next to him continued to enjoy the sunset before she replied, “Yes….soon.”
          “Do you think we’re ready?”
          “You delivered the letters?”
“Just a couple of hours ago.”
The old lady looked at his worn tired face and smiled, “Then we are as ready as we’re going to get. We’ve had six years to prepare for this moment.”
          “Isn’t there anoth-“
“I know what you’re going to say my young friend. Trust me when I say this is the way it has to be. You won’t understand why until later.”
The younger man sighed and continued to look out towards the sunset enjoying the heat on his face. He closed his eyes and spoke again, “But I really think I have an idea on how-“
The woman let out a small chuckle, “You never give up do you? Always with the ideas; that’s what I like about you. I know you’re use to making a plan, but this time it has to be my way.”
The man sighed and continued to look as the sun began to fade into the horizon. He could feel tears in his eyes, but refused to let his teacher…his mentor…his best friend see him. The woman put her hand on his face and stroked his cheek, “Don’t feel so sad. You have to be strong, even during grueling trials like these. I promise you there will be a time for mourning later.”
He turned and embraced her in a strong hug. The two hugged for quite some time as the light of the day was almost gone. The wise old woman broke the hug and then closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She stood motionless for a moment and opened her eyes again; this time a heavy sadness was in her voice, “It’s time for you to leave.”
He nodded as he picked up his black backpack from the ground. As he began to step off the porch, the woman squeezed his shoulder gently, “Go east towards the city, it’s the safest route.”
He turned and gave her a weak smile and said in a choked up voice, “Take care of yourself."
The elderly woman reached behind her and grabbed a tall wooden walking stick and smiled, “You know me.”
With a final smile, the young man was sent away from the mansion, his home for the last seven years. He wasn’t sure where to go, but he knew what was about to happen; he could sense the same presence his elderly mentor had felt. Either way, this was the beginning of a new journey for him as he headed down the pale dirt road away from his home and into the unknown.
