I am surprised to see that this great novel has come under so much attack. I have also studied it, and these cries of racism, vulgarity, violence etc completely miss the point of the novel. They are necessary because they are depicting the truth of the time and place. Any attempt to sanitise it would ruin its impact and honesty. Young teenagers are certainly not too young to read it. The sexuality and violence is so much more toned down than anything these kids see on TV or at the movies !
I think that anyone who wants to ban it has either not left the 19th century, or has a hidden agenda (eg they are closest racists or mysoginists who don't like this mirror being held up to themselves).
