The story filled my heart with joy! Not only is it a throw back to my most beloved genre, that being pulp fiction, but it also also completely avoids all of the pitfalls of that ancient fun time in writing history. It's definitely detective noir but without the drawling cynicism of modern noir-like. You handled the very controversial subject of war and responsibility delicately and effectively. Jacob's journey to absolve himself of guilt is truly amazing, in a way, he is the main protagonist of the story (even if we don't see him till the end.)
As someone who himself had escaped the grueling terrors of war I am inspired by how the end promises us the possibility of a better future. Its a very hopeful message.
-PS Criticism: the story feels hurried in some chapters.
