Forgive my straightforwardness, that's just me. I just like to get straight to the point.
The title, I felt, was wholly appropriate for the story, seeing as upon reading it I got at least an impression of what the content of the story might be about, which is irrevocably MEMORIES. And that was even before I read the story. Good score for a book on the shelf.
The opening paragraph I thought was captivating enough, by which I mean it drove me to want to read the next.
I loved the use of metaphors and similes, especially when the lovers attempts to outdo each other with love assurances is like "a birdie in a badminton game - one person always trying to score with it by landing a well-placed shot". Shows the depth of love between Jack and Emily.
But therein lies the dilemma, of how such a strong love could be seemingly overcome by an opposition, even if as strong as that of Emily's father. This being a short story, it is understandable why space is limited for a bit more backstory on Jack, seeing as Emily's father's prime opposition to the relationship stems from something in Jack's past as the story points out.
The story is a bit reminiscent of Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet, of one dying for love rather than living without it. However the uniqueness lies in the ending, of a man dying to preserve the image of a lost loved in the eyes of a people she herself loved; her parents.
