YOU MADE ME CRY !
I can relate to so much of what you wrote about, as my dad died when I was 13. I knew it was coming, said goodbye many times, before I went to school, or he entered the hospital, or when the time came to unplug machines (he fought another 3 months despite this) - but when he did pass, in the hospital on spring night, I wasn't there and that final goodbye was left unsaid.
My dad was a great teacher, too. A farmer, local politician and friend everyone - even those who hurt him.
Soon (May 1st) it will be 20 years, and things like your essay bring it all back. My tears now are for my children who never met my dad.
Keep writing, you brought out emotion and isn't that the whole point?
