Well done! I felt the flow of your life. While you had failed relationships, you learned, you grew and you moved on. It is truely a wise man who realizes - we are who we are because we made the choices we did and had the experiences we had.
A very powerful poem! You decribe the guilt of what we should have and could have done had we only known the depth of a loved ones despair. Had we only taken the time to listen and see it might have made a difference.
You've done a wonderful job of expessing the complexity of emotion in choosing not to see the people in our lives but in my opinion (and it is just that) your intro should replace your first stanza. "Listen when there is no sound and hear when no one speaks. Then you may just overcome the fate of my mistakes." is far more powerful and says 10 times more than "If a woman cries alone in the dark...is she really there at all."
This is a heart-wrenching story, One that happens far too often. It shows strength of spirit and the ability to take control of ones situation. Through leaving, you took responsibility for your life and recognized that your situation did not have to define who you were.
Each of us has a choice in life. While we can't always control our circumstance, we can choose how it affects us. We can choose to be a survivor or we can choose to be a victim. You've made a bold step toward being a survivor...kudos.
Your ability to see the blessing is refreshing - a child-like innocence that will heal many wounds. Hang on to that. With that being said, perhaps you had to endure this to help you see the warning signs of abusive relationships so you can avoid them in your future and break the cycle.
I have one suggestion to improve your writing - spellcheck.
With love and light...keep writing!
