Wow, this was really awesome! You had a great theme going: that of not holding on desperately to the past, of living on and embracing the future. I liked your metaphors: the lake of ice was a good one to symbolize being shut away from the world. The only thing I can critique is, for me, a personal thing; somehow, I found the sentence "A wave of bitter sadness washes over my battered soul" to be a bit jarring. Other than that, nice work!
